Darius Deontae Bond, who led a dramatic pursuit across Maryland earlier this year that landed him behind bars, has been indicted for a deadly hit-and-run in a stolen SUV that claimed the life of 55-year-old Taneytown resident Terry Crowl last summer.
First responders found a black Infiniti QX60 abandoned at a crash site in the 2700 block of Francis Scott Key Highway in Taneytown on Aug. 20, 2024, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
The SUV, stolen from A&B Auto Body Shop and Repair in Dundalk, collided with a yellow Harley Davidson motorcycle, fatally injuring Crowl.
Prosecutors said that during that investigation, it was also determined that a white van owned by a local electrician was also stolen near the crash scene, which was found two days later.
Carroll County Sheriff James DeWees said at a press conference on Tuesday, March 4, that at the time Bond was indicted by a grand jury late last month, he was being held in Frederick County on burglary, theft, and other offenses.
The crime spree that ended in Frederick County came after Bond was released from a Baltimore City Jail weeks earlier for a September 2024 handgun violation, DeWees noted.
"Darius Bond is only half of the problem in our system," the sheriff said. "The other half is any delegate or senator that passes legislation that makes it difficult to hold him accountable for his criminal activities.
DeWees also cited the Secretary of the Department of Juvenile Services, and "any judge that thought this individual should be released from jail to accumulate more victims."
"I'm into giving someone a second chance ... Not a 22nd chance."
Late last month, a Carroll County grand jury indicted Bond on multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run causing death and two felony counts of theft ranging from $25,000 to $100,000.
He was also charged with driving without a license, a misdemeanor.
"I don't care how old they are ... Mr. Bond has been busy as an adult and has an impressive criminal history, and he just turned 19 in February," DeWees continued.
"Prior to being an adult, he also had multiple contacts with law enforcement and was familiar to police."
DeWees noted that Bond's criminal history includes:
- Multiple thefts;
- Burglaries;
- Motor vehicle thefts;
- Drug possession;
- Weapons violations;
- Other offenses.
"This is just what he accumulated in one year as a newly minted adult, and now he's taken the life of a hard working man in Carroll County," the sheriff said.
"Mr. Bond has been terrorizing multiple jurisdictions for several years now both as a juvenile and as an adult."
Bond is awaiting extradition to Carroll County after his release from a Maryland detention facility, officials said, where he is being held on unrelated charges.
"It's blatantly obvious to me that lawmakers are willing to risk your life and safety for Mr. Bond," DeWees added. "But he cannot be saved.
"He needs to go to prison for a long, long time so he doesn't kill again."
